| Karukara market: facilities and improvements required |

Hamurwa sub-county local government is to construct a 5 million shillings (US$ 7,500) modern toilet facility in Karukara market during the financial year 2007/08. This is in response to public outcry from the people who visit the market every Tuesday of the week when it is market day.
Karukara market is one of the biggest markets in Kabale district and attracts people from all corners of the district. It attracts people from nearby districts and neighboring countries such as Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo who come to buy and sell merchandise and food stuffs.
The health situation in the market is appalling as the existing facility is not enough to match the big number of market goers. It is therefore common to find revelers to the market using the near by bushes for convenience thus pausing an environmental danger to the nearby villages. It was by GODS grace that the recent cholera epidemic did not hit these villages. When the modern facility is constructed this will not only save the lives of hundreds of adults who come to do business in this busy market but also the children who accompany their parents. The market realizes approximately 1 million shillings (us $1500) every week from market dues which should be a big incentive to the local authorities to invest in the improvement of sanitary conditions of the market.
The surrounding hills and valleys which are intensively cultivated year after year produce sorghum, maize, irsh potatoes beans peas and vegetables with a few diary farms in the reclaimed wetlands that stretch from near the market up to the nearby Kabale town. Tobacco which is grown in some parts of the district is one of the cash crops that are exported to the nearby Rwanda.
However more needs to be done to improve the environment in the market. During the weekly market day a lot of eating and drinking is done in the open which makes sellers and visitors vulnerable to sanitation related diseases. The market has no slaughter house despite the many animals that are slaughtered every market day. |
