Transforming Mekelle University - from under a tree to a village
26 December 2007
Author: Mitiku Haile and Kay Muir Leresche
Mekelle University is located in Tigray region in northern Ethiopia. It is situated in a rural town with close links to agricultural communities. It has grown from 42 students to 7000 full time and 6000 part-time students in the ten years since opening in 1993. The Faculty of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resource Management has made a deliberate effort to reorient agricultural university education away from conventional teaching to a more student-centred, participatory learning approach. The emphasis in their research programmes is on practical solutions to rural development problems, working together with farmers and local communities.
