Agriculture is to be given due recognition along with sustainability. While it is implicit in the MDGs, agriculture has not taken centre stage in development "buzz" since the 1970s. Recent statements and trends in the multilateral and bilateral dialogue once again highlight agriculture, forestry, fisheries, water and natural resources and the importance of building human capacity. Hopefully too most of our governments have now also recognised that agriculture is the backbone of their economies and central to both economic and social development. We need to generate a surplus in agriculture releasing resources to be used effectively in industry and services.
